About
Hi, Welcome to the Metropole!
The Metropole is a place where organizations, art, events and cultures converge, uplift and inspire others through their diligent work, relationships, outreach and advocacy. Located in Seattle’s Pioneer Square, the Metropole is a set of historic buildings that were sustainably adapted and renovated to LEED-platinum standards, making it one of the most energy efficient and sustainable buildings in Seattle. The building contributes to the neighborhood by providing tenant offices for nonprofits at below market level rent, a childcare center for the community, event and meeting rooms, an interpretive center, a rooftop deck and art throughout by local artists.
We strive to serve the needs of overburdened communities that would otherwise be priced out of being able to operate in and enrich the local area, while providing accessible, beautiful and sustainably conscious accommodations for all of those who visit and work here.
About Us
The Metropole is owned and operated by the Satterberg Foundation. The Metropole strengthens the foundation’s vision of supporting nonprofits through authentic, relationship-based partnerships within Black, Indigenous, and People of Color communities.
The design and development of the Metropole has been curated with intentionality and with consideration to the current and future needs of the greater Seattle community. We consider ourselves stewards of a place that inherently belongs to community. We work hard to build authentic and trust based relationships while bringing together community leaders, advocates and nonprofit organizations. The community centric culture of the Metropole can be seen and felt through every element of the space – from the tenant and programming mix to the art on the walls.

An Environmentally Conscious Building
The Metropole is LEED Platinum-certified, the highest level of certification in this rating system, which evaluates a building’s level of sustainability. We believe that environmental stewardship is a critical and essential element of supporting all communities and the world in which we work, live and thrive in. Everyone deserves to work and gather in a clean and healthy space.

The History of the Metropole
The Metropole was built in 1892 and over the years, has housed many different tenants, from the G.O. Guy Drug Store to Busy Bee Café in addition to hotel guests. The building suffered a major earthquake in 1949 and a fire in 2007. The building has been vacant and in need of severe restoration since the fire.
In June 2019, spurred on by feedback from its grantee partners who stated that they were being pushed out of the Seattle marketplace due to the high cost of rising rents, the Satterberg Foundation acquired the Metropole with the intention of revitalizing it and to supply below-market-rent office spaces for nonprofit organizations in the area — while still honoring the past of the space.
